IPS vs Amoled display

Display technology is growing rapidly with surround displays and foldable displays and rollable displays, but IPS display and Amoled displays are the main type of displays used by the manufacturers in the market now a days. Lets see how each of them work and what are its use.

IPS display

These are LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) displays consist of a matrix of Liquid Crystals. Liquid Crystals do not emit light themselves and are reliant on some form of back-light to illuminate the whole display. So they are very visible in direct sunlight compared to amoled displays.

They have better viewing angles and better visibility outdoor. Most of the budget smartphones and mid range smartphones use this display panels. These are found in some mid range phones like Poco X2, Redmi note 9 pro, Realme 6 pro, etc.

Amoled display

These panels have better contrast ratio with pitch blacks and these panels are better in low light condition. It has good colour reproduction compared to IPS-LCD panels.

But, they struggle in outdoor condition compared to IPs panels. These are especially famous for there pitch black which show up as the pixel which is not displayed. This feature saves a lot of battery. These are priced high compared to IPS panels. These display panels are preferred by majority of users. These are found in some phones like Oneplus 8 pro, latest Iphones, Samsung flagship and some mid-range phones like Samsung galaxy M31, M21.
