In recent months, we have seen phones coming with higher megapixel cameras like 48MP, 64Mp, 108MP. They all use pixel binning technology to improve their photos. For instance in the 48MP camera 4 pixels combine to produce 1 super pixel, which can be very handy for low light photography. So that means a pixel binned shot on a 48MP camera is actually 1/4th of it which is 12MP.

On the other hand the new samsung galaxy s20 ultra uses 3×3 pixel binning technology which combines 9 pixels into one super pixel. So the 108MP camera actually gives you the same 12MP output. All this helps get better low light shots.
At the end of the day, Megapixel is not the one which matter, what matters is the post-processing which companies have to focus on.
